Shreyas Santosh Iyer, popularly known as Shreyas Iyer among all, is one of India’s most prolific and talented middle-order batsmen right now. He first played for India in a T20 match against New Zealand in 2017. In that same year, he made his debut in the ODI format against Sri Lanka. His first century in his career came in 2020 against the New Zealand team.
The 2015-16 ‘Ranji’ season was Shreyas Iyer’s best first-class career to date, where he scored 1321 runs at an extraordinary average of 73.38.

Domestic Career
Shreyas Iyer was brought up on the legendary grounds of Mumbai which has been the home to some of the greatest players in the history of Indian cricket or even the world. At a very early age of just 12, he got noticed by Pravin Amre at the iconic ground, Shivaji Park Gymkhana. From there, he started his career as a very talented batsman to team India.
In 2014, he got selected for the Under-19 World Cup due to consistent performances at the Indian domestic levels. But the tournament did not help him to gain recognition due to his poor performance for the team. That is why, after that, he joined the Trent Bridge team in England to polish his skills. England pitches are usually quite difficult to bat on because of extreme swing, bounce and cold weather. There he made sure that everyone’s attention was glued to him. He scored 297 runs from just 3 innings at a nearly impossible average of 99.
After his stellar performances in England, he got directly selected into the Mumbai senior squad at the Vijay Hazare Trophy and thus he made his First-Class debut in 2014. There too, he continued his brilliant form and was able to score 273 runs at an average of above 50. To date, he appeared in more than 50 matches in First-Class cricket for the Mumbai team where he scored a total of 4592 runs with a remarkable average of 52.18 and was also able to take 4 wickets.
ODI Career
In 2017, against Sri Lanka, he got his first chance of playing ODI cricket for the first time in his career but unfortunately, he got out by scoring only 9 runs. In 2019 he scored 31 runs in an over against the West Indies and after that he never looked back. He has played 30 ODI matches for team India where he scored 1108 runs at an average of 42.62 with 11 half centuries and 1 century.
T20 Career
Shreyas Iyer is quite a good player when it comes to the T20 format because of his aggressive batting and tendency of staying till the end of an innings to help the team cross the winning line. To date, he has played 46 T20I matches where he managed to score 1029 runs in total with a healthy strike rate of 136.95.
IPL Career
When it comes to the IPL, Shreyas Iyer is a very consistent middle-order batsman with dignified captaincy skills. He was first time bought by the Delhi Capitals back in 2015 at a whopping 2.6 crore but he was registered in the auction, at a base price of only 10 lakhs.
In 2022, he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for 12.25 crores of rupees as an upstanding and responsible middle-order batsman who is also the captain of the team. To date, he has played over 100 matches in IPL and scored a total of 2776 runs with a reasonably good strike of 125.38. Iyer’s highest run in IPL is 97 and it is still to be broken by him.
The first time he got the chance of captaining any side was Delhi Capitals after Gautam Gambhir left his captaincy due to his poor form in that season mid-way. At that time he became the youngest captain to lead any side in IPL for the first time. In his first match as a captain, he scored an unbeaten knock of 93 from just 40 balls which includes 10 sixes.
In the next season of IPL, people came to know about his great captaincy skills when he helped The Delhi Capital team reach the playoffs after seven consecutive seasons.
Shreyas Iyer’s Family
Shreyas Iyer was born in the year 1994. He is the son of Mr Santosh Iyer and Mrs Rohini Iyer. The Iyer family were basically from Thrissur, Kerala, but they were used to living in Mumbai. Shreyas completed his schooling at Don Bosco High Schools at Matunga and college at Poddar College Of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai.
